1 Kings 17:8-16
Hymn of meditation: PH 335
Word of God, the Holy Fountain,
You came down, from Heav’n, you came.
Great strength you give to all people,
To those that open their hearts.
If you are like flower that withered,
Shriveled up by heat of sun,
If you are so thirsty, come now,
Come and drink from Fount of Life.
We thank God again for another time in His presence to study under the theme: “Watch, wait and pray”. Watch means “to be alert”. You should be praying, be vigilant and wait for the appearance of the Most High King because we know that Christ died and rose again and ascended into heaven from where He is coming back for all those who are ready to receive Him.
Waiting for Him is not for us to be idle but to be watching. The word ‘watch’ connotes there is something around so we need to be vigilant.
It is Jesus who created heaven and earth, who gave us life and who has made us who we are today, who is warning us today, amidst all that is happening in the world. Today, He wants us as believers of the Lord Jesus Christ to watch, and be vigilant because there are several things happening around us all over the world; tsunamis, wars, corruption, killing of people in Embassies and many others.
There are also a lot of uncountable number of churches all around us which makes me wonder why those who call ourselves by the name of the Most High King who is holy, pure, truthful, are the same people in the offices engulfed in corruption. There are believers in the passport offices, police stations and other offices but you would be surprised at their behavior when it comes to money issues; they all forget about who Christ is. Also at the hospitals, the nurses and workers are the same people we attend fellowship with, and even pray together with for the sick people. That is why the Lord Jesus is telling us today to watch, pray and be waiting; be vigilant.
Do not sit idle because Christ is coming again, and Hebrews tells us that, He is coming as a judge to judge each and every one; dead and alive. Do not tell yourself that since He has not come, you will continue to enjoy your sins. It will catch you up with you on the judgement day.
Bible tells us that He will come again and all those who have entrusted their lives to Him would be raised and would be caught up together in heaven and they would go to the Most High King and be there forever. Those who have not given their lives to Him would perish because they would be sent to eternal judgement. Do not live life anyhow.
Let the word of God challenge you to live right. The world is not living according to the principles of the God. Are you ready to receive Him after He returns from preparing a place for us? When He comes, He will not take only pastors, elders, presbyters, or leaders of the groups but those who have washed their robe in the blood of the Lamb.
Jesus is the lamb of God. Confess all your shortcomings and sins to Jesus. He is the one who cares, and He will listen and forgive you, cleanse you, wash you and make you a new person. Whatever position you occupy, get ready because Jesus is coming again. Watch out for things happening in the world, be awake, be ready for the King of kings and Lord of lords on His coming. He is coming with salvation.
Salvation is a total package: there is redemption, peace, deliverance, healing and everything else. Why not seek this Jesus and be completely delivered from the powers of world, self, sin and death? We have a complete package awaiting us in salvation. Are you ready?
So Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
Are you waiting? He says watch and wait. Waiting is not idleness but by prayer, living right, obeying the word of God, sharing fellowship with believers. Not remaining home after confirmation and working on your membership card so you can receive a good burial service when you die. No! Watch and do the right thing.
We will face many oppositions, insults and backbiting even in the church when we decide to stand for truth but be prepared to stand. Do not give in to their desires to see you slumber and fall out of your Ministry. Watch and do not repeat those things you do which do not please the Lord. The Lord is a faithful God when you find yourself in hardships, difficulties and circumstances beyond your control; persist in prayer, service, ministry and walking in His ways.
When you are blessed with a special ability, learn to show respect to those who seem not well endowed. God has given us gifts, talents and abilities for the building up of the church. You are just a part of the body. When the head is sick, you are also sick, so watch out and pray. As you wait on the Lord in prayer, it will bring healing, comfort, restoration, deliverance to people. Fill your mouths with songs of the Spirit and minister to those around you. Your song should be distinct from that of the world.
Jesus is warning us about hypocrisy, and that is why He says “watch out”! Be mindful not to pride in living and the giftings you have. Do not feel proud for it is by grace you are where you are now. Humble yourself in your gifts so that what God has given to you will shine and be a blessing to everybody. There is a lot of deception in the church today by way of fake deliverance and healings. Beware and do not fall prey to such tricksters.
They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. Such men will be punished most severely.”
Thanks be to God that there is greatness in giving to God (the widow’s mite). In your celebration, remember that God has given you the gift and expects us to give our all and all in return. He is faithful. Also, in the case of Elijah and the widow of Zarephath, God honoured the woman when she obeyed the word of the prophet. In the hard and difficult times, study and obey Him and He will reward you in the end. He is a faithful God.
Great is Thy faithfulness,
O God my Father,
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not,
Thy compassions, they fail not
As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.
