Bible readings
Deuteronomy 4:5-9
James 1:17-27
Mark 7:9-16

Hymn of meditation: PH 146
To us, Jesus gave His life,
Example, He set for us.
His Word shows us what to do,
Lay our lives for others here.

 Verse 2
Jesus left His Father’s Throne,
Meekly, became flesh like us.
Patiently, He sought His own,
Gently, we must seek to serve.

It is by the grace of God that all of us have lived to enter this month of September. It is also only by God’s grace that I have successfully completed my schooling to be made a Reverend Minister, and I hope all of us will be attentive and ready to answer the call of God to go about our respective duties and ministries when He speaks.

Song interlude: PH 17
Sing joyful songs, with praise and thanks,
To God, the loving Father.
For all His wondrous works in us,
In Him we have all blessings.
And joy eternal now we have,
In Him, we have such peace in death,
O magnify the Father.

Verse 2
The hosts of heav’n give thanks to you,
King of all kings, Almighty.
And we on earth join in this praise,
Join to extol the Father.
To praise and glorify the Lord,
The One who made all things so well,
O magnify the Father.

Our theme today, “Be a channel of truth and holiness” is a command to us all to serve as a channel between God and the world. It is a command you cannot ignore; it is a must for you and not the one by you.

In our text from Deuteronomy 4:5-9, God told Moses to remind the people of Israel how He has brought them through the wilderness, protected and cared for them before they would enter into the promised land. God further asked Moses to tell them to obey the instructions He had given them and their fathers. Many of them were not part of the journey when it began from Egypt. Many died on the way and the new ones were obviously not born by then. Thus, they were not aware of what God had said and especially, how He brought them out from Egypt to where they were then. So, Moses called the people and told them all that the Lord had told him.

One underlining word in all the instructions to the people was “Obey”. The same word appeared in the passages from James and Mark.

James brings out the many things we get into when we do not give our hearts to the Word:

James 1:20-26
For man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it–he will be blessed in what he does. If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.

Now, let’s hear what Mark also has to say in Mark 7:20-23
He went on: “What comes out of a man is what makes him unclean. For from within, out of men’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and make a man unclean.”

There are only two things involved as clearly under-listed in all the readings: Either you give yourself and entire being to the Word of God or your heart is filled with folly.

Where do you stand? Which channel are you?
Are you a channel that propagates the Word of God, one that people see God through or one that people  run away from?
Are you a channel of peace dedicated to protecting the truth and holiness?
Be that channel that exhibits the real attributes of God; truth and holiness.

My message to you today is simple; Give yourself up for the Word, obey and you will be the right channel through which God reaches the entire world with His truth and holiness. We are a peculiar people dedicated and called by God from the world unto Himself to be used to propagate His message to the world. Give yourself up and do not reside in the old man which should be left in the past.

I pray that God makes you exactly what He wants you to be; His mouthpiece to proclaim His message to the world. As you give your heart out to the Lord and subject yourself unto obedience, His favour and blessings that you have sought after for a very long time will locate you this very day.

The Lord who has begun a good thing in you will surely bring you to that expected end. Together, we thank God for bringing us thus far.
